Are Artificial Sweeteners a Good Alternative to Sugar?
To begin with, I don’t think anything with the word “artificial” in its name can be good for you. I know that science is advancing, but so often, playing with nature does not backfire on us. When new products are developed, they are tested, but in almost every case, more research is done years later, as it often reveals the real dangers of these man-made products. You can call me crazy, but I am very sceptical about playing with the laws of nature.
Anyway, to this day, people think they can trick their bodies into having this sweetness without the downside of calories from sugar. And yes, you can trick your taste buds, but there are downsides.
When you eat sugar, your taste buds let your body know to prepare for incoming energy and calories. But when those calories aren't coming in, your body's expectations aren't met. All this leaves us feeling hungry and dissatisfied.
Another huge downside to artificial sweeteners is that they taste much sweeter than regular sugar. This disbalances our perception of sugar, and what tasted normally sweet before, does not taste sweet enough anymore. All this can lead to even stronger cravings for sugar and sweetness.
Even if you think this is a hack for not using actual sugar, it can backfire on you. Psychologically, you may even think you’ve saved calories by not eating real sugar, so why not to consume more chemicals in the form of artificial sweeteners?
So, just be cautious and aware of all this, and know it’s not a free pass. I will go into the studies revealing the real dangers of artificial sugar in my other articles, so keep an eye on them.
